Course Content:

  1. Students will learn how to plan, plant, tend, and harvest vegetables, fruits, and flowers.
  2. Students will determine why learning about gardening and our environment is important, to themselves, their community and the world as a whole.
  3. Students will learn what "organic" means, how it is relevant to our lives, and why there is a surge in the popularity of organics and locally grown foods.
  4. Students will actively use skills from other subject areas for real-life application of subjects being covered in school, or that will be covered, in a relaxed, but stimulating and creative, environment.

Specific Course Objectives:
  1. Gardening – students will learn about the plants we can grow in NW Florida, and how to tend to them; the student will be able to demonstrate competencies, skills, and techniques in gardening
  2. Environmental Studies – students will demonstrate problem-solving skills related to gardening and our environment
  3. Critical Thinking – students will learn to think critically about our world, using creativity to understand many points of view
  4. Integration – students will use skills from many areas, such as writing, reading, following directions, research and analysis; they will be able to locate and use data related to gardening and environmental studies
Evaluation:
Students will be evaluated according to class participation, projects, tests or homework. Class participation and attitude will comprise the majority of a student’s grade. A point system will be used. Projects and tests will be weighted accordingly, depending on the complexity of the assignment.
90-100 A
80-89 B
70-79 C
60-69 D
0-59 F


Extra Credit:
Some assignments and project may have extra credit opportunities. No extra credit will be assigned to make-up for missed work or overcome poor participation or attitude.

Make-up work:
Students will need to see Mrs. Gordon to make-up work missed in class or as homework.

Late work:
Late work will be accepted only 1 day late and points will be deducted.

Safety:
We will be working with tools that can be dangerous. The students will develop a set of garden rules, and abide by them for their own safety and their classmates' safety.

Dishonesty or Disrespect:
Neither will be tolerated.
